Reproduce vivid colors with two different sets of LED light sources

Taiwan's CMO has developed a "MultiPrimary" backlight technology that uses two sets of RGB LED light sources with different characteristics on the chromaticity diagram to reproduce vivid colors. The company demonstrated LCD panels using this technology at "FPD International 2007." This technique achieves the same effect as increasing the color number of the color filter by making up for the defect.

MultiPrimary uses two sets of RGB LED sources. One set is a light source commonly used for LED backlights that covers NTSC's 88% color performance range. The other group is an RGB LED light source that uses G, B characteristics on the chromaticity diagram and a different set of LEDs. The light source covers the first set of color representations of the NTSC ratio of 65% for color compensation of the narrow blue-green portion of the display field. The total of the two light sources can cover the NTSC ratio of 102%. Incidentally, the R characteristics of the two light sources are the same.

The color filter is made of RGB three-color products. Previously, there have been techniques for expressing vivid colors using 5-color color filters including Y (yellow) and C (blue-green). However, this technology has disadvantages such as low aperture ratio and resolution, and increased manufacturing processes. The technology developed this time uses the same three-color color filter as the original, so there are no such disadvantages.

An image of 120 Hz is displayed by alternately lighting two sets of light sources. When the first set of light sources is used, the panel is driven with blue-green image data extracted from normal image data. When the second group of light sources is used, it is driven only by the image data of the cyan portion. In addition, in the display mode of the panel, an OCB method with a halftone response speed is also adopted.

Taiwan’s Chi Mei Electronics said that it is not necessary to add R from the purpose of using the second group of light sources. However, if you need to compensate for the Y and M (red-purple) parts in the future, you should use a different R from the first group.
