Light evening dress of Lushan Catholic Church

In October 2010, at the picturesque Le Méridien Sheshan, Thor Daniel Hjaltason tells the story between him and the Catholic Church in Lushan. At the corner of the floor-to-ceiling windows, you can see the corner of the Catholic Church in Lushan. In the late autumn sun, it doesn't look too much. It is still a European-style Gothic spire, which has become an indispensable part of the Lushan skyline for more than a century. At the end of 2009, Thor Daniel Hjaltason undertook the lighting renovation work of the Lushan Catholic Church and took the initiative to find Philips-related products and services from the world's leading lighting solutions provider. In May of this year, from the date of completion, the Lushan Catholic Church, which only used the night color as a makeup, was covered with an LED dress, which shined in the night sky.

LED, changing the choice of design rules

Lushan Catholic Church is located in the foothills of Songshan District in the western suburbs of Shanghai. It is known as the “First Cathedral in the Far East”. The church was built in 1871 and is a European "Baroque" style building. The entire building has a Latin cross shape, which fully reflects the principle of asymmetry in the right aesthetic of the building. The church has been built for more than 100 years. The existing church was expanded in 1925 and is a landmark building in southwest Shanghai. As a historical building, Lushan Catholic Church is a model of religious architectural art in the history of Shanghai architecture. It was listed as a Shanghai cultural relics protection unit and an excellent modern building on September 25, 1989.

With the convening of the Shanghai World Expo, the Lushan Catholic Church as an important landmark in the history of Shanghai's urban development, renovation and lighting renovation have also been put on the agenda. Since the establishment of the Lushan Catholic Church, it has only been renovated and expanded in 1925. For more than half a century, it has not been repaired. In order to protect the historical building itself and shape the image of Shanghai as the center of communication between China and the West, in 2009 the Songjiang District Government decided to renovate the church. The floodlighting project was an important project in the renovation.

“The first item I got was that the whole transformation could not be holed, screws, lamps and fixtures could not be seen, and the beauty of the building itself could not be destroyed.” Hjaltason said in the first sentence of the interview. Because the church itself is a "four no" building, that is, no nails, no wood, no steel, no beams, so its internal lighting requires that steel materials such as screws cannot be used to destroy the original style of the church. In addition, because the church is adjacent to the astronomical observatory, its facade lighting design must also strictly control brightness and glare, and can not affect the relevant tests of the astronomical observatory.

“So, in the choice of lighting scheme, I first gave up the traditional halogen lamp, because its effect and the daytime did not have much effect, if it is only similar to the effect under the sun, then what is the meaning of this work? What?” Hjaltason is a designer who is diligent in thinking and willing to challenge himself.

“And, I hope to create a new design and transformation model. The traditional lighting transformation is to consider the lamps and light sources first, and then based on the hardware foundation to make the design, which makes the modification of the subsequent scheme very difficult, design The division often has to compromise between the architectural style and the lighting scheme.” Hjaltason used a gesture of choice. “So, in the first step, using LED products, I first designed and sketched out what I wanted. Lighting effects; then choose specific products."

“I returned to the United States last Christmas. One day I saw a building with a great wall-washing effect. It was the light that I wanted. I later knew that this was Philips’ Color Reach product, and at the same time It is also the only product with a powerful wall washing function that can project 28 floors."

Philips lighting related people explained that because of the high flexibility of LED, can be large or small, the beam can be wide or narrow, so the LED particles can be precisely customized according to the user's needs, showing different lighting performance. Therefore, the emergence of LEDs in recent years has given designers a new possibility in the field of architectural design and lighting. The limitations of traditional lighting have been somewhat broken by LEDs.

As early as 1996, Philips Lighting proposed the concept of CPL, the lighting concept of urban, residential and lighting. Specifically, how to use lighting as an effective tool to improve people's lives in the process of urbanization worldwide. Quality, shaping the character of the city. Philips is guided by this concept to make meaningful innovations, develop a comprehensive product line, and constantly meet the elaboration requirements of designers and users.

"It is precisely because of the flexible nature and technical strength of Philips LED products that my ideal effect can be fully demonstrated. Only in this way, the innovative rules of the product can be smoothly implemented." Hjaltason does not forget to add here. Road.

Lighting design, the art of hiding light

“Complete the design effect, choose the product, then how to express the product in a proper way, this is the key to the project.” Hjaltason said, “I always believe this, the best lighting solution must be the light source. Cleverly 'hidden', in the end people ignore the light source, they only see the perfect combination of light and architecture, which is also very important in my lighting design principles, whether in terms of volume or heat dissipation , all have the inherent advantages of 'hiding'."

In the floodlighting scheme of the Lushan Catholic Church, the advantages of LED have been fully exerted. Among them, the use of Color Reach high-power color dynamic floodlights illuminate the Virgin Mary statue of the church tower, dome and tower, this 290-watt luminaire can adjust the different beam angles, the exterior of the entire building The silhouette is subtly illuminated, while creating a wonderful linear wall-washing effect that blends the light with the charm of the church. The 50-watt Color Blast luminaire is used to clearly illuminate the entire beam structure and windows, giving it a fantastic dramatic effect under the night. The energy-saving effect brought by LED is more obvious. After the installation of 230-inch LED lamps, the lighting power consumption of the church is reduced by 50% compared with the past, and the service life is increased to 50,000 hours. Subsequent facts also proved that Color Reach and Color Blast Powercore very well expressed the concept of the natural environment and architecture in the Nordic designer's work.

“In any project, we have to think deeply about what the product can do for the building. If you just consider the LED in the production sequence, even if you make more products for people to buy, it makes no sense. As a designer, we must help the entire industry to think about how to apply LEDs." This is also the philosophy he pursued in the lighting renovation of the Lushan Catholic Church.

As a leader in the world's lighting industry, Philips Lighting advocates the concept of “lights to enhance life” and continues to enhance the integration of historic buildings and modern society through meaningful innovation. After the renovation of the lighting, the Lushan Catholic Church, under the night, also presents a moving scene of glazed tile and amber.

In the promotion of lighting renovation of historical buildings and the interpretation of urban context by lighting, the case of Lushan Catholic Church provides a new way of thinking and a model for reference for the protection of China's rich architectural heritage.
