As the world's first "LED City" pilot project, Raleigh City has obtained very obvious funds for energy utilization and maintenance. From January 2007, a total of 141 LED lighting fixtures were installed. The city's municipal parking lot is on the 3rd floor.
According to a report by the Raleigh City and Cree on the "LED City" project, the installation of these LED lighting equipment will bring about 46,720 kWh or 40% of the total installed capacity per year, which is equivalent to the current electricity price. Save $2,803 per year. Raleigh's leading power supplier Energy Development Company partnered with Raleigh and Cree to launch and implement the project.
In addition to energy savings, the city and Cree also reported some important maintenance savings – due to the long life of LED lighting, there will be $3,325 in savings per year.
The installation of LED lighting on the third floor of the city's municipal car park was the first part of the “LED City†project, co-sponsored by Raleigh and Cree to save taxes and protect the environment. The installation of parking lot lighting was completed on January 11, 2007. The two sides also hope to use this project as a global energy-saving pilot.
Cree produces LEDs and is a supplier of new energy-efficient lighting equipment. These energy-efficient lighting devices can be used as a solution to reduce lighting power consumption. Lighting Science Group provides LED lighting installations. The 3rd floor of the parking lot is basically 24 hours a day, and most of the lighting has never been turned off. The first floor only performs night illumination.
According to the report of the "LED City" project, the initial installation investment for this project is $42,300. If the savings in power and maintenance can continue to grow at the expected rate of 3%, the pilot project will achieve cost recovery in the seventh year. If lighting is only provided at night, the city's electricity and maintenance costs will be saved for another five years, for a total of 12 years.
The “LED City†project also brought security and other benefits to Raleigh. According to the results of the March survey, the number of people who think this parking is very safe is 76% higher than before the project was implemented; the quality of lighting is “very good†increased from 24% to 86%. This actually supports industrial research. The conclusion is that LED lighting quality is far superior to traditional lamps, and LED lighting equipment does not contain harmful substances such as lead and mercury, which is beneficial to the protection of the environment.
The initial success of the project advanced the implementation of the plan, and Raleigh City has installed LED lighting equipment in more areas of the city. The lighting installation of 900 parking spaces in the underground garage will be completed in 2008. The initial phase of the project brought more than $75,000 in savings to the city in the first year alone.
