Germany developed a wirelessly powered organic electroluminescent device

With the combination of RFID-like energy harvesting technology and organic electronic components, a group of companies in Germany have launched a printed electroluminescent (EL ectroluminescence) device wirelessly; this technology is also suitable for security applications such as payment cards.

The prototype of the above technology is a combination of organic (printing) components and conventional silicon-based circuits. The printing assembly includes an electroluminescent display, as well as an RFID antenna, an inductive circuit, etc.; the power control circuit includes a conventional silicon-based rectifier, a DC/DC converter. In addition, the prototype has a miniature battery that maintains the electroluminescent illumination after the RF field is removed.

The prototype is the result of a collaboration between several German companies, including Schreiner Variolight, which supplies electroluminescent parts, PolyIC, a supplier of printed electronics and RFID technology, HC Starck, a material manufacturer, and Varta Microbattery, a battery supplier. Its potential application areas include security and payment solutions.
