According to manufacturer Vu1, there is a novel bulb that is not only bright but also free of mercury. The company has developed a new lamp that can replace CFL and LED for five years. Vu1's ESL lamps last up to 6,000 hours, about three to four times longer than incandescent and CFL lamps, and produce less than half the heat of incandescent lamps.
A disadvantage of CFL lamps is that they contain about 5 milligrams of mercury, which, although small in size, is sufficient to cause harm to the environment. The EPA (US EPA) recommends leaving the room when the CFL lamp breaks. According to Vu1, ESL lamps can be handled in a single operation without harm.
Although LED lamps have a service life of 40,000 to 50,000 hours, they are expensive. For example, the retail price of the Panasonic EverLeds lamp, which will be available in Japan next month, is about $40.
Vu1's ESL lamp price will be set at around $20, and it is expected to be launched in mid-2010 by the city's regular Vu1 plan at the end of the year.
