Pepper: Robots that don't give you AR menus are not good waiters

For the choice of obsessive-compulsive disorder, when entering a restaurant, the most tangled thing is to look at the dishes on the menu and do not know what to choose. Although some of the menus will be accompanied by pictures, but those photos always seem to bring their own soft filter, but the end is not exactly the case, for food goods this is absolutely unbearable! Now, maybe robots and augmented reality will help you avoid this kind of trouble.

At the very least, this is a future that PeppAR Waiter shows us. At the TechCrunch Disrupt hackathon hackathon held in San Francisco this weekend, this forward-looking project was unveiled.

Yosun Chang is the developer of this project. This ambitious and brave hacker participated in more than four hacker marathons. Other projects he has participated in include SnapGlass.es, PokeTrump.club and Point.Shop. This time, PeppAR Waiter used the Sprout Pepper robot developed by Softbank and the augmented reality service developed by Chang, Holo Yummy, to create a futuristic dining experience.

When you want to order a meal, Pepper will be your waiter and will provide you with an ordering service with a tablet computer displaying the menu. At the same time, Pepper's Tablet PC will display 3D pictures of dishes through augmented reality technology, which can be watched by the user through an application on a mobile phone or a tablet computer.

When the user selects the food, the work of the Pepper robot is completed, and someone will later serve the dish for you. Of course, there may be robots in the kitchen. This is another story.

In fact, Pepper had previously appeared in the restaurants of Silicon Valley and served as a waiter. However, now that the AR function has been added, the level of Pepper's attendants will increase by one notch. The menu used by developer Chang comes from the Atelier Crenn restaurant in San Francisco. This restaurant can be found on the Holo Yummy platform. Of course, the platform can also add other restaurants, or even food services.

Chang said that the technology may eventually be promoted in high-end restaurants or hotels because consumers want to be able to know food before they serve, and they are also more interested in robot services. Although PeppAR Waiter may not actually implement these services in the future, it nonetheless shows us an interesting future.

In fact, it is not unusual for robots to serve as waiters. Even domestic restaurants, robot service attendants and chefs are not uncommon. The clerk's workload is large, but the salary is always very low, and the robots will not complain about the work. If they are properly maintained, they will be able to serve customers with grudges. The emergence of PeppAR Waiter may enable developers to pay more attention to this market. In the future, this robot, known as the most human-like Pepper, may have more interesting applications and functions.
