LED lighting has not officially entered classroom lighting

At present, the incidence of myopia in students is high. After investigation, it has been found that environmental factors and incidence of myopia are very close, among which classroom lighting is one of the most important influencing factors. In order to improve this situation and provide students with a healthy lighting environment, since 2008, Yan Yonghong, a professor at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning of Chongqing University, has undertaken the National Natural Science Foundation project “Study on Lighting Effects of Classroom Health Based on Photobiological Effects”.

Professor Yan believes that classroom lighting not only has a great impact on the health of students' eyesight, but because of the non-visual effects of the eyes, the differences in the spectrum and light intensity of different color temperature sources will also affect the students’ circadian rhythms, causing them to have excitement or fatigue and affect the learning efficiency. And mental and physical health. Therefore, the classroom lighting lamp should not only consider the influence of the light source color temperature and illumination on students, but also pay special attention to the spectral safety of the light source.

At present, classroom lighting is mainly based on fluorescent light sources. LED lighting has not officially entered the classroom lighting field. Only LEDs have been used in some experimental projects. At present, it is more common to replace the old T8 fluorescent tube with a straight tube LED for higher luminous efficiency. However, since many schools have adopted T5 fluorescent lamps with higher light efficiency, the idea of such LED applications will be greatly constrained in the future. Since the current price of LED light sources is higher than that of T5 fluorescent lamps, there is no advantage in light efficiency. Therefore, if the concept of energy-saving only to promote LED classroom lights, personally think that the prospects are not very good.

China’s young people’s myopia rate ranks second in the world, especially the college students’ visual apathy detection rate is as high as 82.68%. The reason is related to poor classroom lighting. Compared with fluorescent lamps, LEDs can more easily meet the requirements of spectral safety. Our experiments also proved that LEDs have better visual performance under the same color temperature and the same illumination. Therefore, from the perspective of benefiting the health of students' sight and alleviating students' nervousness, LEDs have greater advantages over fluorescent lamps and have a very large market potential.
