**[Global Network Technology Report]** If you're an airport dispatcher, you face a complex daily challenge: managing 1,700 dynamic flights that need a parking spot each day. Every decision requires careful consideration—such as whether overnight flights align with the next day’s departure order, if there's enough time to reassign, and which of the 300 available parking bays are suitable based on aircraft size. Some gates even require a 15-minute shuttle ride, adding to the pressure. Passengers expect on-time departures, but how do you manage all this efficiently?

This is the reality for dispatchers at Beijing Capital International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world. In 2016 alone, it handled over 90 million passengers. With such high traffic, coordinating aircraft movements, passenger flows, and baggage transfers becomes extremely challenging. Delays can disrupt the entire operation, affecting thousands of travelers.
To address these challenges, Alibaba Cloud introduced the **ET Aviation Brain** at the Yunqi Conference and Beijing Summit on December 20. This AI-powered system uses machine learning and operational optimization to assign aircraft parking spaces. It's expected to handle 1,700 flights per day, saving approximately 5,000 hours and significantly improving flight transfer efficiency while reducing delays.
At Capital Airport, two planes land every minute, totaling around 1,700 flights daily. With only about 300 parking spots, dispatchers spend 2–3 hours each day manually assigning gates. They must remember details like aircraft type, gate size, runway position, and more. Unexpected events like bad weather can throw everything off, forcing last-minute changes.
The ET Aviation Brain aims to reduce this workload by automating the process. It learns from multiple data points, including aircraft models, landing times, gate availability, and runway positions. Using advanced algorithms, it creates optimized solutions that consider constraints and real-time adjustments.
Built on Alibaba Cloud’s proprietary cloud computing platform, the ET Aviation Brain can reassign 1,700 flights in just 50 seconds. This not only maximizes apron space but also improves aircraft turnaround efficiency, reduces delays, and increases parking space utilization by 10%. As a result, around 20,000 passengers no longer need shuttle buses daily, saving about 5,000 hours in total.
According to Ali Wanyun, Chief Scientist of Machine Intelligence at Alibaba Cloud, intelligent parking assignment is just one feature of the ET Aviation Brain. The system is designed to expand into other aviation scenarios, such as flight recovery, ground staff scheduling, and route planning. Earlier this year, Alibaba Cloud partnered with Xiamen Airlines and Baiyun Airport to launch the Smart Aviation AI Challenge, inviting engineers worldwide to develop AI-driven solutions for aviation problems.
Looking ahead, the ET Aviation Brain will continue to evolve, offering AI-based solutions to enhance airport operations and create a smarter aviation ecosystem.
Interestingly, Capital Airport isn't the first place where Alibaba Cloud has applied its AI technology. A year ago, the company used its systems to manage the logistics of 1.8 million riders during peak times, showcasing its growing expertise in intelligent operations.
