The importance of color and lighting to the subway

It has been nearly a century and a half since the first subway in the world was built in London in 1863. Today, with the gradual networking of rail transit, the subway is more than just a simple means of transportation. It is more reflective of the underside of a city.

As a fast-track transportation method that carries a large number of people, the subway station is a unique construction and space of modern cities. As people's demand for transportation and spiritual comfort continues to increase, the design of monotonous and indifferent metro stations is out of date. Under the premise of being economic, reasonable and practical, it is also necessary to highlight the satisfaction of the basic physiological needs of the subway design.

This article discusses the interior design concept of the subway station from color and lighting, aiming to propose some design concepts for the interior design reference of the subway station.

The importance of color and lighting to the subway station

Among the visual elements of shape, color and quality, color is the most likely to attract people's attention. It is also a common method to use color for spatial processing. And color is a very effective and economical design element.

The environment inside the station strives to be bright and harmonious. Partial use of some bright colors can invigorate the spirit and break the dull and dim psychological prejudice.

Not only that, the decoration of the subway station decoration material also originates from the light, the material refracts and reflects the light, forming a beautiful visual picture, so that the material forms a rich indoor space.

For example, the wall lighting design of Chicago O'Hare station is unique. The walls are made of transparent embossed hollow glass bricks, which are designed according to the acoustic principle to form undulating waves to reduce the noise of the station. Instead of changing the conventional direct illumination, the station uses a high-pressure sodium lamp to illuminate the transparent hollow glass brick behind the glass wall to express the color change of the wall behind it, and to adjust the light effect by changing the style and transparency of the glass brick. The entire platform space is very colorful, very sporty and rhythmic.

In order to reduce the negative feeling of people's dullness in the underground space, the station environment should be better with a light and bright overall tone. According to the needs of the decorative shape, some small areas may be applied to display the theme of colorful decoration. Of course, the display of color is also directly related to the selected decorative materials. The color selection range of ceramic tile and plastic panel is more flexible.

The lighting design of the subway station usually uses the change of illumination, the type and location of the light source, and the proportional relationship between indirect light and direct light to handle the atmosphere, so as to highlight the personality of the station. In the case of the luminaire arrangement, the illuminating effect of the overall feeling is sometimes formed by the combination with the building member, and sometimes a specific effect is formed by the combination of the luminaires themselves, and sometimes the decorative effect of the luminaire itself is highlighted.

In the subway station, the changes in lighting and lighting methods have a significant impact on people's visual effects, especially for special-shaped lamps.

The lighting of subway stations is considered from the principle of energy saving. At present, LEDs are the main choice for lighting. Today's LED light sources can meet the good requirements in terms of light color and color rendering index. For example, the color temperature is 2000-3000K. A light source with a medium color temperature that is more suitable for the left and right.

The luminaires are arranged with overall ambient lighting and necessary local or accent lighting, or a two-color temperature source can be used to make the lighting not monotonous.

It doesn't matter, we have pictures, and videos.

Here is a German photographer who has changed from art direction, Nick Frank, the most beautiful subway station in the world in the past five years. From Germany, Australia, Sweden to the United Arab Emirates, the unmanned subway station recorded by Nick Frank is like a surrealist wonderland.

After careful appreciation, I did not find the name of the Chinese city. Is there a little disappointment in my heart? In fact, China also has a better subway station.

That is the Shentong subway in Shanghai.

Different from the previous subway design, the Hanzhong Road Transfer Hall is the first collaboration with ToMASTER Tomorrow Masters and Young Artists, which is the international new art design resource platform. It brings a new bright spot to the interior design of the station - Lighting Mei Chen installation works The Underground Butterfly Magic Forest has created a precedent for new media art to enter the domestic subway space.

In 2015, the butterfly occupied the entire wall and has 18 colors. In the choice of butterfly shape, four species of butterfly, butterfly, butterfly and butterfly are used. They are beautiful examples among butterflies. This represents the process of the four transformations of the Shanghai Metro.

Each butterfly has an LED lantern behind it. With the digital technology of optoelectronics, it has changed 18 colors such as red orange, yellow, green, blue and purple, which means 18 Shanghai subway networks to be built by 2020.

The design concept and method of the subway station are not static. Breaking the limitations and timeliness of the original design concepts and methods, grasping the ideological context of the times and fully considering the traffic function characteristics of the subway station will make the design concept fresh and fashionable. The design method is practical and feasible.
