Manufacturers have made efforts to make optical fiber preforms

With the launch of the "Light into Copper" and "Fibre to the Home" projects and the promotion of triple play, Internet of Things, and cloud computing, China has produced a large amount of demand for fiber optic cables for communications, and China has become a telecommunications fiber optic cable. Manufacturing big countries and demanding countries. However, the development of optical fiber core technology, optical fiber preforms, relies heavily on imports and has become a “bottleneck” for the development of China's optical fiber business.

To this end, Corning (Shanghai) Optical Fiber Co., Ltd. (referred to as "Shanghai Corning") on August 10, said the company plans to expand the existing factory building of 200 Qinjiang Road, Shanghai to incorporate the production of optical fiber preforms, to achieve independent production The preformed products have changed the status quo of importing prefabricated rods as production raw materials from abroad in order to reduce production costs, increase production efficiency, and increase the company’s overall profitability.

It is reported that the new production capacity of Corning’s expansion project will enable Shanghai Corning to meet the demand of China's optical fiber market, increase production efficiency, and benefit the region. Currently, Shanghai Corning has commissioned the Shanghai Academy of Environmental Sciences to publicize the results of the environmental impact assessment of the expansion project. It is expected that the follow-up work will be carried out soon. In recent months, outside of Corning, domestic optical fiber manufacturers such as Zhongtian Technology, Changfei Optical Fiber, and Fortis Group all expressed that they would exert their efforts to develop optical fiber preform production technology and expand optical fiber production capacity.

Optical fiber demand massive helpless preform bottleneck OFweek optical communication network was informed that Corning spent several years to produce optical fiber for telecommunications networks, but usually, those expensive networks can only reach the user's office building or local data center. Corning said in July that its next plan was to provide high-speed connectivity technology in consumers' homes and plan to upgrade FTTH to fiber to equipment.

In an interview, Clark Kinlin, Corning’s president and chief executive officer of Optical Cable Systems, said: “Our optical fiber has already served thousands of people. We intend to serve a single individual.”

Corning said that the potential for fiber-to-the-device fiber-to-the-device opportunities is very large. It is expected that the annual sales of USB cables for various mobile devices will reach 2.2 billion, and the demand for optical fiber for this will be even greater. Big.

Moreover, as a result of the 3G construction, the promotion of the triple play policy, and the deployment of FTTx, it has provided unprecedented opportunities for the development of the communications optical fiber and cable industry.

The development of triple play will comprehensively promote the full-scale transformation of digitalization of the cable television network, speed up the construction of the telecommunication broadband network, and promote urban fiber to the home. Regardless of whether it is from broadcasting or television, the development of triple play will accelerate the construction of optical access networks. Not only that, the evolution of the Internet has promoted the development of broadband. The replacement of mobile networks and the application of Internet of Things have all promoted the development of broadband, and the development of broadband has generated tremendous demand for optical fiber cables.

Corning had expected its global fiber sales to increase by 10% to 12% year-on-year this year, and will jump by more than 10% in 2012. Some of the business will be generated by the fiber-to-the-home market.

According to market analysis, since China’s 3G concentration was built in 2009, China’s domestic annual tender volume has been maintained at more than 80 million core kilometers per year. It is expected that the national total demand will remain between 9500 and 10 million core kilometers in 2011. At present, the total demand for optical fiber in China is approximately equal to 50% of the total global demand, and the Chinese market will still have a major impact on mainstream optical fiber and cable manufacturers.

“Although the demand for optical fiber and cable is strong in China, the demand for optical fiber occupies an important position in the world. However, the development of the core technology, optical fiber preform, cannot meet the domestic demand.” Executive Vice-Chairman, China Optical Communication Cables Committee, China Electric Industry Association Director Mu Chengbin said.

Optical fiber preform technology is an important basic material for the production of optical fibers and optical cables, and is hailed as the "crown pearl" of the optical communication industry. However, 60%-70% of optical fiber preforms used for optical fiber enterprises in China are imported.

“China consumes nearly half of the global optical fiber preform. In 2010, China’s demand was 3,000 tons, and China could produce 1400 tons, but it imported 2003.6 tons.” He Heyi provided a set of data.

The manufacture of optical fiber preforms has become a "bottleneck" problem affecting the development of China's optical fiber and optical communications industries. The localization and scale-up of optical fiber preforms have become an urgent need for the development of the industry.

It is reported that giants have made joint efforts in industrial cooperation. As early as 2000, China began to develop optical fiber preforms. However, due to the inability to produce preformed casing in China, the situation in which the production of optical fiber preforms is controlled by people has not changed. The low yield of China's optical fiber preforms reflects China's gap between the level of preformed technology and the level of industrialization and the international advanced level. Most of the domestic companies are using newly developed technologies, which are still not perfect in scale production, and the pass rate of optical fiber preforms is not high.

In addition, most of the major raw materials used by domestic companies for manufacturing preforms rely on imports, including quartz glass substrate tubes/sleeve tubes, helium gas, silicon tetrachloride, and germanium tetrachloride. The increase in raw material prices will reduce the production cost of preforms. Participation in international market competition creates a bottleneck.

Changfei Fiber Optic Cable Co., Ltd. deputy general manager of fiber optic division Jiang Xiaoqiang also worried that: "China's fiber optic cable core technology subject to people, new products, new processes have not yet shaken off passively in general, the foreign countries through the optical fiber preform, source Constantly obtained high profits from our country. In an old saying, China's fiber optic cable market 'revolution has not yet been successful'."

OFweek Optical Communication Network had previously reported on July 12th that Zhongtian Technology released additional announcements and raised funds of RMB 1.68 billion. Among them, RMB 1.18 billion was used for optical fiber preform manufacturing projects and continued to develop and manufacture optical fiber preform technology. In May 2011, Zhongtian Technology successfully produced optical fiber preforms with completely independent intellectual property rights, and has already begun mass production.

From a technical point of view, Zhongtian Technology adopts the fully synthetic stick method. This technology was introduced from Hitachi, Japan. Zhongtian Technology bought out Hitachi’s 18 core patents on sticks. Compared with the other common technology, the bushing method, the full synthesis method has a longer development cycle and is more difficult to process. However, taking into account the avoidance of the import of the outer layer in the future, the yield of the preform can be further improved. It is estimated that after the company's production capacity is fully produced, the cost of making rods will be reduced by 30%-40% compared with the casing method.

At present, Zhongtian Technology has successfully developed the G657 series of optical fiber preforms, and its performance can meet the requirements. It is currently mass-producing to meet the large-scale development needs of “fiber to the home”.

In addition, Fortis Group is the first company in China to master the full synthesis technology of optical fiber preforms, and has also recently made efforts to develop and produce optical fiber preforms.

Muler, a senior analyst at OFweek Optical Communication Network, believes that under the stimulation of demand, optical fiber manufacturers have invested a lot of manpower and material resources, and strive to break through the technological bottlenecks and achieve independent innovation. This kind of situation is very good, but in the current situation where domestic preform technology has fallen behind, we are in a position of “fast catching up”, and if conditions are unlikely to be unlimited, if we want to catch up as quickly as possible When we come up, we need more "good steel to use" to avoid duplication of investment and waste of resources. Therefore, in response to this situation, the author responded to the advice of relevant experts, and Chinese enterprises should strengthen joint and shared interests, and on the basis of digesting the imported optical fiber preform technology, strengthen the cooperation of major domestic preform rod makers and improve the technology. At the end of the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period, we will strive to achieve self-sufficiency in precast rods and localization of equipment.
