Lenovo Group, which currently holds a market share of 13.9%, posted a 25% increase in shipments in the third quarter from a year earlier.

IHS said that Lenovo’s performance in the third quarter was the biggest challenge Hewlett-Packard had faced since the second quarter of 2008. During the same period, Hewlett-Packard's shipments increased by 6% from the second quarter and by 2.6% from the same period of last year. The company remains the industry leader and holds 18% of the market.

Dell's shipments for the quarter rose by 1.3% from the second quarter but fell by 0.3% from the same period last year. The company slipped to third place with a market share of 12.5%.

In the third quarter, the global shipment of personal computers was 90.4 million units, an increase of 2.6% from the same period of last year, which was lower than the 6.8% expected before the IHS. Seasonal shipments increased by 5.5% from the second quarter.
