China Mobile shows local chip makers: no longer insist on five-mode single chip

On April 22, since the China Mobile TD-LTE terminal collection required a single-chip five-mode last year, the debate on the use of three-mode and five-mode for TD-LTE terminals has not stopped. The purpose of China Mobile's mandatory requirements for the five models has also caused many speculations in the industry.

Recently, China Mobile updated the "White Paper for TD Custom Terminal Products", which officially requires that all TD-LTE custom machines must be five-mode products from May 31. On April 10, at the "China Intelligent Terminal Industry Summit Forum" jointly organized by the Telecommunications Research Institute of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the TD Industry Alliance, Zheng Hao, Project Manager of China Mobile Terminal Company, made a TD-LTE terminal product strategy for China Mobile in the second half of the year. Interpretation, clear the second half of the custom machine in the second half of the policy, but no longer insist on all single-chip SoC solutions.

No longer insist on a five-mode single chip

One of the main points of Zheng Yu’s interpretation is that the terminal resources are fully tilted towards TD-LTE. With the maturity of TD-LTE smart phones, shipments in the third quarter will be greatly reversed with TD-SCDMA, resulting in a situation in which TD-LTE has largely surpassed. Zheng Wei believes that by the second half of the year, the overall TD-LTE chip will meet market demand, and the price of TD-LTE five-mode smartphone will be rapidly reduced to 600-700.

The second point is that the custom machine coexists in the first half of the year, and all five models in the second half. According to the data provided by Zheng Zheng, it is estimated that 95 models of three (four) model mobile phones will be listed in the first half of the year, and 35 models of five-mode mobile phones will be available. In the second half of the year, three (four) model mobile phones will be reduced to 30 to 40 models, and five-mode mobile phones will reach 130 to 140 models. . Among them, the custom machine all requires five modes.

On-site industry sources revealed that all five models of custom machines also mean a significant shift in China Mobile's resources, and the five-mode trend is irreversible. However, some insiders pointed out that China Mobile's annual target for this year is very ambitious. It is impossible to complete it only by five models, and it is necessary to promote the products of the three models. "The development of three-mode products in the second half of the year depends on whether China Mobile's channel subsidy policy is strong."

In addition, the speech also mentioned that China Mobile no longer insists on five-mode single-chip. This can be seen as a demonstration of China Mobile's local chip makers who have made important contributions to TD-SCDMA. After all, the local chip maker's five-mode single-chip solution will not mature until the second half of the year. Zheng Wei pointed out that in the second quarter, single-chip dual-card products will be listed. By the second half of the year, single-chip and patch-plan dual-card products will be listed in large quantities, with a ratio close to 40%.

However, some insiders pointed out that the cost and power consumption of the patching scheme are high, and it can only be a short-term emergency solution. The market still needs three-mode and five-mode SoC products.

Local chip vendors still face multiple challenges

Although China Mobile released its goodwill to local chip makers, Jin Yidun, deputy secretary-general of the TD Industry Alliance, believes that local chip makers will still face multiple challenges.

One is the entry of foreign mainstream chip makers, which has led to more intense competition. According to statistics, the current domestic and international mainstream TD-LTE chip vendors already have Qualcomm, MediaTek, Marvell, Samsung, Intel, Broadcom, NVIDIA, Ericsson, Sequans, Altera, HiSilicon, Zhongxingwei, Lianxin, Spreadtrum, and Post Office. 15 RDA, Avago and so on. Local chip makers face global competition, especially in the face of foreign chip giants with FDD advantages.

The second is multi-mode multi-frequency into an inevitable development trend, operators also have demand for six models, five-mode chips will mature commercial in the second half, and consider compatible with CDMA mode in 2015. The five-mode product Qualcomm has occupied the majority of the share, and due to the absolute control of CDMA, only Qualcomm has six-mode commercial chips, local chip makers are not expected.

The multi-core and 64-bit upgrade of the CPU has led to a significant increase in chip makers' IP core purchase expenses. The high integration of peripheral wireless modules such as Bluetooth and WiFi with the CPU requires a large amount of capital investment. Foreign chip giants started earlier. After decades of accumulation, they have strong financial resources to invest in development. For relatively weak local chip makers, it is a very real problem.

The third is the increasing risk of intellectual property rights. The TD-SCDMA chips previously developed by local chip vendors are mainly used in the domestic market. The internationalization of LTE, the dual-mode FDD/TDD fusion and the multi-mode requirements of the terminals all accelerate the decentralization of TD-LTE patents, resulting in more Intellectual property risk. In particular, foreign chip giants such as Qualcomm have adopted a discriminatory competition strategy against domestic manufacturers, exploiting the patent first-mover advantage to exploit Chinese terminal manufacturers and crack down on local competitors.

Jin Yidun said that countries such as Japan and South Korea have already established patent technology institutions through official and private cooperation to protect their companies' right to fair competition in the market. Drawing on international experience, the TD Industry Alliance (TDIA) announced that it will jointly establish upstream and downstream core enterprises in the TD industry chain, establish China's first mobile technology patent company, and build a mobile patent system to defend and respond to possible future patent disputes and enhance the market of local enterprises. Competitive advantages.
