Nokia's First MeeGo Mobile: From Saver to Chicken

Nokia's First MeeGo Mobile: From Saver to Chicken After a long wait, the world’s first mobile phone equipped with the MeeGo operating system finally came out.

At the NOKIA CONNECTION 2011 conference held in Singapore on June 21st, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop showed the outside world a series of progress since Nokia implemented the new strategy, and released several S40 mobile phones, but the most The eye-catching or Nokia N9 debut machine using the MeeGo operating system.

MeeGo is a new system jointly developed by Nokia and Intel for mobile smart terminals. It was once considered as the biggest hope to save Nokia's high-end smart machine market. However, after the time-to-market delay of the MeeGo mobile phone, Nokia began to shift its focus to Microsoft. In February this year, Nokia officially announced its alliance with Microsoft. Microsoft’s Windows Phone system will be the main platform for future Nokia smartphones. Many people even think that this is equivalent to declaring MeeGo's decline in Nokia.

Slowly progressing MeeGo

As a result of the siege of the Saipan system, Nokia, which has lost power in the high-end smart phone market, once used MeeGo as its hope for restoring the situation. MeeGo is a combination of Intel Moblin platform and Nokia Maemo. In February 2010, the two companies jointly released this intelligent operating platform for mobile terminals.

As the predecessor of MeeGo, the Moblin operating platform project was officially launched by Intel in July 2007. The initial positioning was for the development of Mobile Internet Devices (MID) devices. The project has been launched for nearly 4 years.

For the original Nokia and Intel, they all hoped to put the MeeGo smart machine into production as soon as possible in order to compete with the fast-growing iOS and Android camps. However, the long wait has caused most people to lose patience.

Especially after the CEO from Microsoft Microsoft, Stephen Elop, took office and said bluntly that the speed with which Nokia turns into innovation is not fast enough. “We thought that MeeGo platform would help us to win the high-end smart phone market, but with the current speed of development. From the perspective of the end of 2011, we have only one MeeGo-based product on the market."

So, under the promotion of Elop, Nokia and Microsoft have also reached a cooperation. Originally planned to fully support MeeGo's Nokia high-end smartphones, it will mainly adopt Microsoft's Windows Phone system.

In a media interview in Beijing in May this year, Elop said that for MeeGo, Nokia has made a strategic assessment internally, because the progress of MeeGo is really too slow, so we must make a change, "I hope Intel Corporation in the development of MeeGo Progressing well".

Yi Yi, chairman of the consulting company, Zhang Yi, in fact, Nokia's internal transfer from MeeGo to Microsoft is a different voice, after all, has done a lot of work and investment.

One noteworthy detail is that Nokia’s official promotion of the N9 phone also deliberately played down the MeeGo system, emphasizing appearance, signal, NFC capabilities, and supporting Qt development tools.

Zhang Yi believes that "N9 will not be Nokia's last mobile phone using the MeeGo system." This means that in the high-end smartphone market, there are still games within Nokia.

Intel attitude

The competition in the mobile phone market has now evolved into a full-scale competition for related ecosystems. The developers that Apple and the Android platform are entrenched in let other mobile phone manufacturers and telecom operators envy. How does MeeGo attract developers' attention?

For the application software of the MeeGo mobile phone, the solution proposed by Nokia is to connect through its Qt application development framework. However, Intel obviously has other plans. After Nokia and Microsoft announced a close cooperation, Intel CEO Otellini would bluntly cooperate with Nokia to develop the MeeGo operating system is a mistake. "In hindsight, Nokia is a wrong partner." Otellini believes that this also led to the postponement of the launch of smartphones with Intel processors.

Zhang Yi believes that from a strategic point of view, MeeGo is a very important event for Intel, so Intel will definitely not give up because of Nokia's reduced support. However, due to the delay of strategic timing, it is difficult for MeeGo to compete for market share with Android and iOS in the smartphone market.

Judging from current trends, Intel has begun to strengthen its strengths in areas other than smart computers, such as automotive built-in entertainment systems, intelligent connected TVs, IPTV set-top boxes, tablet computers, netbooks, and so on. The relevant manufacturers will acquire the MeeGo V1.2 system in the second quarter of 2011. By the fourth quarter, Intel plans to upgrade the MeeGo system for smart TV products. Its 1.3 version of the MeeGo system will be targeted at car entertainment systems and home computers for audio and video chat.

On May 21, a number of developers told reporters that due to their limited energy, they will not consider MeeGo for the time being, and they currently choose to invest in "more cost effective" on iOS and Android.
