Smart speaker market: the foreign market is relatively mature, the domestic market is still in the early stages of development

According to a recent survey by Edison Research, a well-known national public radio station and market research firm, the percentage of American adults who own smart speakers has climbed to 16%, representing a remarkable 128% increase from January of last year. This growth highlights the rapid adoption of voice-activated smart devices in households across the United States.

As reported by PhoneArena, smart speakers combine audio technology with artificial intelligence and were first introduced by Amazon. Despite being less than three years old, these devices have become an essential part of daily life for many Americans. A significant 65% of users surveyed expressed that they wouldn't want to go back to a life without a smart speaker, indicating strong user satisfaction and dependency on the technology.

The survey also revealed how people use their smart speakers. Approximately 34% of users rely on them to listen to the radio, often replacing smartphone usage for this purpose. Another 30% use them while watching TV, showing the versatility of these devices beyond just music or voice commands.

Controlling home appliances, such as turning lights on and off or adjusting the thermostat, is one of the main reasons people purchase smart speakers. Moreover, 38% of users said they plan to buy a second smart speaker for other rooms or to manage more household devices, suggesting that the integration of smart speakers into home automation systems is becoming increasingly common.

A recent online survey conducted by Accenture / Harris Interactive found that two-thirds of smart speaker owners spend less time on their phones after acquiring the device. This shift in behavior indicates that smart speakers are not only changing how people interact with technology but also how they manage their daily routines.

MediaTek’s general manager of the home entertainment product business group, Youjie Jie, shared insights about the market's explosive growth. He mentioned that in 2016, the global smart speaker market sold only 3 million units, but by the following year, it had surged tenfold to 30 million units, signaling a massive expansion in consumer demand.

Globally, the smart speaker market is still evolving, with foreign markets being more mature and dominated by tech giants like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Apple. In China, although the market is still in its early stages, it has attracted major players such as Alibaba, Baidu, Tencent, JD.com, Xiaomi, and Lenovo. Many smaller startups have also entered the space, showcasing strong confidence in the future potential of smart speakers.

In the U.S., Amazon Echo has sold over 10 million units since its launch two years ago, with sales exceeding $1 billion. Analysts at Morgan Stanley have even called smart speakers “the most successful consumer electronics” since the iPad. With major companies like Google, Apple, and Facebook entering the market, some organizations predict that smart speakers will be present in 75% of American households by 2020, reaching nearly 94.2 million units.

In China, tech giants and AI startups have been actively launching their own smart speaker models. Alibaba introduced “Tmall Genie,” while Xunfei (HKUST) and JD.com established Linglong Technology and launched the “Dingdong Speaker.” Lenovo released the “Lenovo Smart Speaker,” and Xiaomi launched the “Xiaomi AI Speaker,” backed by Google investment. Other startups, like Ask, have also entered the market with their own versions.

Looking at the shipment data from 2017, the smart speaker market began to take shape globally. According to Canalys, shipments surpassed 30 million units in 2017, and the global market is expected to reach 56.3 million units in 2018—marking it as a “decisive year” for the mass adoption of smart speakers. As the technology continues to evolve and integrate into everyday life, the future of smart speakers looks promising and full of possibilities.
