According to a recent survey by Edison Research, a well-known national public radio station and market research firm, the percentage of American adults who own a smart speaker has climbed to 16%, marking a significant increase of 128% compared to January of last year. This rapid growth highlights the growing integration of smart speakers into everyday life.
Originally pioneered by Amazon, smart speakers have quickly become a staple in many American homes. Despite being less than three years old, they have evolved into essential devices for millions. A large portion of users—65%—say they wouldn’t want to go back to a life without them, indicating strong user satisfaction and dependency.
The primary uses for smart speakers include listening to the radio (34% of users), which often replaces smartphone usage, and using them while watching TV (30% of users). Additionally, many people use these devices to control home appliances, such as turning lights on or off or adjusting the thermostat. In fact, 38% of users even consider purchasing a second smart speaker for different rooms or to manage more devices.
Technology consulting firm Accenture/Harris Interactive found that after acquiring a smart speaker, two-thirds of users tend to spend less time on their smartphones. This shift suggests that smart speakers are not just a novelty but are becoming a key part of daily routines.
MediaTek’s general manager of its home entertainment division, Youjie Jie, noted that the smart speaker market saw a dramatic rise from 3 million units in 2016 to 30 million in the following year, showing an explosive growth trend that is expected to continue.
Globally, the smart speaker market is still developing, with foreign markets being more mature. Major tech companies like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Apple have all made significant investments in this space. Meanwhile, the Chinese market, though still in its early stages, is attracting a growing number of internet and tech giants, including Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent, JD.com, Xiaomi, and Lenovo. Many smaller startups are also entering the field, signaling strong confidence in the future of smart speakers.
In the U.S., Amazon Echo has sold over 10 million units since its launch two years ago, generating more than $1 billion in sales. Analysts at Morgan Stanley have called smart speakers "the most successful consumer electronics product" since the iPad. With major players like Google, Apple, and Facebook launching their own smart speaker models, some analysts predict that smart speakers will be present in 75% of American households by 2020, reaching nearly 94.2 million units.
In China, leading tech companies and AI startups are actively expanding into the smart speaker market. Alibaba introduced the “Tmall Genie,†while Xunfei and JD.com launched “Dingdong Speaker.†Lenovo released the “Lenovo Smart Speaker,†and Xiaomi launched the “Xiaomi AI Speaker,†backed by Google. Other startups, like Ask, have also entered the market with their own versions of smart speakers.
Looking at 2017, the smart speaker market began to take shape. According to data from Canalys, shipments exceeded 30 million units that year, and global shipments are expected to reach 56.3 million in 2018—a year seen as crucial for the widespread adoption of smart speakers. As more consumers embrace these devices, the smart speaker industry is set for continued growth and innovation in the coming years.
