The correct way to open the drone in the field

In order to raise awareness about nature conservation and showcase the rich diversity of China’s wildlife, the Wild Chinese Studio, founded by renowned wildlife photographer Mr. Zhi Zhinong, organized the 2017 Wild Chinese Wildlife Photography Training Camp. Dajiang Media was invited to design and deliver an introductory drone course for the event, and also participated in the aerial photography session. This initiative aimed to engage more people in environmental protection through visual storytelling. Mr. Zhi Zhinong has dedicated his career to capturing and protecting China's wild animals. He introduced the elusive golden monkey to the public and was among the first to document the illegal hunting of Tibetan antelopes in the region. His powerful images have played a significant role in promoting wildlife conservation. In 2010, he was recognized as one of the 40 most influential natural photographers globally by British Outdoor Magazine. The Wild Chinese Wildlife Photography course covered various aspects of photography, including land and underwater photography, and incorporated drone technology to offer a new dimension to wildlife documentation. The training took place in a stunning location surrounded by mountains and sea, providing unique opportunities for creative framing. However, the local weather conditions were unpredictable, with sudden gusts of wind challenging the participants. Dajiang Media’s instructors prepared the trainees for these conditions, explaining that the Inspire 1 drone could maintain stability in winds up to level 4. They emphasized the importance of remaining calm and following proper procedures when encountering strong winds during flights. Participants learned how to manually control the drone and return it safely, even in difficult conditions. They practiced identifying wind direction and adjusting their flight path accordingly. Safety and precision were key components of the training. During long-distance flights, trainees were taught to monitor the DJI GO interface and use the map feature to track the drone’s position. Understanding compass orientation and using manual controls were essential skills for safe operation. Many trainees found the drone experience to be transformative. As one young aspiring wildlife photographer put it, “The drone offers a bird’s-eye view that is completely different from traditional photography. For large-scale shots, like the migration of Tibetan antelopes, this perspective gives a more dramatic and immersive visual experience.” Through hands-on training and real-world practice, participants gained confidence in using drones to capture stunning wildlife imagery. The integration of drone technology into wildlife photography not only enhanced the quality of the footage but also contributed to better monitoring and protection efforts in the field. This training camp marked a significant step forward in combining modern technology with traditional wildlife conservation efforts, offering new tools and perspectives for future generations of nature photographers.
