In order to raise awareness about nature conservation and showcase the rich diversity of China’s wildlife, the Wild Chinese Studio, founded by renowned wildlife photographer Mr. Zhi Zhinong, organized the 2017 Wild Chinese Wildlife Photography Training Camp. Dajiang Media was invited to design and deliver an introductory drone course for the event, while also participating in the aerial photography sessions. This initiative aimed to engage more people in environmental protection through the power of visual storytelling.
Mr. Zhi Zhinong has dedicated decades to capturing and protecting China's wild animals. He is well-known for using his camera to highlight the beauty and fragility of nature. His work brought attention to the elusive golden monkey and exposed the illegal hunting of Tibetan antelopes. In 2010, he was recognized as one of the 40 most influential natural photographers in the world by British Outdoor Magazine.
The Wild Chinese Wildlife Photography Course combined traditional land and underwater photography with modern drone technology, offering participants a comprehensive understanding of wildlife documentation from multiple perspectives.
During the training camp, drones were used to capture unique aerial views of the natural landscapes. Unlike traditional photography, drones can provide a bird’s-eye view, allowing photographers to document entire ecosystems and reach areas that are otherwise inaccessible, such as steep cliffs or dense forests.
Aerial photography also plays a crucial role in tracking animal movements from above, helping to identify patterns that might be missed on the ground. Regular drone patrols can aid in monitoring wildlife and deterring poaching activities, making it a valuable tool for conservation efforts.
One of the key challenges during the training was operating drones in unpredictable weather conditions. The course took place at Dali University, surrounded by the scenic Cangshan Mountains and the Bohai Sea. The local climate is known for sudden gusts of wind, which required trainees to learn how to handle their drones effectively.
Before the trip, Dajiang Media instructors warned the participants about the potential for strong winds. They explained that the Inspire 1 drone could maintain stability even in winds up to level 4, giving trainees confidence in their equipment. Safety protocols were emphasized, including setting up return-to-home alarms to ensure safe landings.
When encountering sudden gusts during flight, trainees were taught to assess the wind direction, stabilize the drone, and manually guide it back in a straight line. Adjustments were made based on the wind’s direction to ensure a smooth return.
Trainees also practiced long-distance flights over complex terrains like forests and canyons. To minimize risks, instructors first had them simulate flights without power, ensuring they understood the controls before taking to the skies. During actual flights, they monitored the DJI GO interface, tracked the drone’s position on the map, and used compass data to navigate safely.
As one participant noted, “The drone offers a completely different perspective compared to traditional photography. For large-scale shots, like the migration of Tibetan antelopes, the overhead view creates a more dramatic and immersive experience.†Through this training, aspiring wildlife photographers discovered new ways to capture the beauty of nature from the sky.
Overall, the training not only enhanced technical skills but also deepened the participants’ appreciation for the importance of wildlife conservation. By combining art and technology, the program opened new doors for future generations of nature storytellers.
