The infrared source EMIRS 50 used in this solution is available in a compact TO-46 package, either with a protective cap or a reflective surface. These configurations can be customized with filters made from materials such as sapphire, calcium fluoride, barium fluoride, and tantalum. The Axetris infrared source is particularly well-suited for compact gas detection modules. All Axetris infrared sources are based on micromachined, electrically modulated thermal radiation technology. This patented design offers true blackbody radiation characteristics across the 2–14 μm wavelength range, high emissivity, long operational life, and features extremely fast modulation with low power consumption. Over the years, Axetris infrared sources have been successfully integrated into various applications, including medical diagnostics, industrial monitoring, and security systems. Common target gases include CO, CO₂, refrigerants, CH₄, NOx, and alcohol vapors, among others.
To ensure the overall performance of the system and enhance measurement accuracy, it's not enough to rely solely on the sensor. Shijian has invested significant effort in selecting high-quality supporting components. From the BOM (Bill of Materials) of the system, we can see that the engineers at Shijian specifically chose Microchip’s power chip MIC5253 and the operational amplifier MCP6H02, among other top-tier electronic components. These choices help fully leverage the sensor’s capabilities and improve system reliability.
In addition to hardware, Shijian’s design team has developed supporting software that enables developers to monitor, test, and analyze data from different sensor channels within the system. The sampled data is transmitted via a serial port to a host computer, where the software displays the measurement spectrum. On the left side of the interface, users can view data from the reference channel and the CO₂ channel. The white curve represents the reference signal, while the red curve shows the CO₂ detection signal. The software also supports a two-channel calibration algorithm to measure gas calibration values and allows for data storage.
When running the NDIR.exe software, it is essential to have the NDIR driver installed or to install the LabVIEW 2014 runtime engine along with the LabVIEW VISA driver (visa540_full.exe). Once these are set up, you can proceed with the following steps:
**Configuring the Serial Port**
Open the software and select the appropriate serial port number. Then, configure the settings as follows:
- Baud rate: 115200
- Data bits: 8
- Parity: None
- Stop bits: 1
After setting these parameters, click the "Open Serial Port" button to switch to the "Show Data" mode.

*Software interface*
"The company’s high-performance Cortex-M0+-based MCU, combined with power and interface products, along with MEMS-based infrared light sources and sensors, enables Shijian to provide customers with a complete infrared gas detection solution," said Qiu Jiayang, Director of Field Applications at Shijian. "These solutions are widely applicable in industrial gas emissions, coal mine flammable gas monitoring, environmental surveillance, medical safety, smart buildings, locomotive exhaust testing, and more."
