On February 7, the European Union Joint Research Center (JRC) issued a new research report stating that 27 EU member states are committed to achieving a renewable energy share of 34% by 2020. JRC’s research report entitled “Technology Assessment for Renewable Energy Action Plan†predicts that by 2020, the EU's PV installed capacity will reach 84.4GW, accounting for about 2.3% of total renewable energy. Solar thermal power generation reaches 59TWh per year.
The research report not only focuses on electricity production but also includes energy use. JRC found that the 27 member states of the European Union plan to increase the ratio of renewable energy sources such as photovoltaics to 20.7% by 2020.
JRC predicts that according to the current government's policy support, by 2020 EU PV installed capacity will reach 84.4GW. The report also predicts that the proportion of solar thermal power generation in total electricity use will reach 2.4% by 2020, achieving an annual power generation of 59TWh.
JRC pointed out that the average growth rate in the next few years will be concentrating solar thermal photovoltaic power generation (CSP), ocean energy and offshore wind power.
At present, about 15% of the electricity in EU member states comes from renewable energy, and 10% of heating and cooling need to come from renewable energy sources. By 2020, the share of renewable energy in heating and cooling will increase to 21.4%.
