New York will renovate 250,000 LED street lights by 2017

New York City's 250,000 street lights will be replaced by LED energy-saving lamps by 2017, saving $14 million annually.

New York City Mayor Bloomberg said that the first phase of the project was to replace Brooklyn's 80,000 street lights into LED energy-saving lamps, costing $2.5 million. The construction period will start from next spring and be completed by the end of 2015. The plan is part of the city's energy conservation and environmental protection projects, which were completed in phases by the Transportation Bureau. The first projects were in Brooklyn.

Bloomberg said that if all of New York's 250,000 street lights are replaced with LED energy-saving lamps, the annual electricity cost will be 6 million US dollars, and the maintenance cost will be 8 million US dollars, saving a total of 14 million US dollars per year.

At present, some sidewalks and highways in New York City have been replaced with LED energy-saving lamps. In addition to street lights, New York's bridges and tunnels will be gradually replaced with LED lights for decoration or lighting.
