Maxim Petaluma reference design for faster and accurate monitoring and acquisition of intelligent power distribution data

May 15, 2014, Beijing, China – Maxim Integrated Products, Inc. (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the Petaluma (MAXREFDES30#) subsystem reference design, enabling utilities and infrastructure suppliers to measure distributed grids simultaneously and accurately data.

Power companies around the world are deploying more reliable systems that require high-precision distributed grid state data to better utilize distributed generation technologies such as solar and wind. The voltage and current measurements of each phase must be performed simultaneously so that the power company can grasp the strict time relationship between the phases and maximize the uptime of the grid. Petaluma is a high-speed, simultaneous sampling 8-channel analog input front-end (AFE) that simultaneously monitors the various phases of the grid and allows the grid administrator to optimize the signal link for distribution automation.

Petaluma's signals are tuned to 50Hz to 60Hz to match global grid standards. 3 The sampling power consumption is less than 1W at the same time. The high sampling rate (250ksps per channel) and 16-bit accuracy make it possible to respond quickly to grid faults. Petaluma is ideal for any application that requires simultaneous multi-channel analog input sampling (eg, multi-phase motor control and industrial vibration detection) and accurate calculation of instantaneous power.

Main advantage

· High precision: 16-bit ADC and external voltage reference provide 0.02% high accuracy and 3ppm/°C maximum temperature coefficient

Simultaneous sampling: The subsystem includes 8 high-speed, 250ksps simultaneous sampling analog input channels, accepting ±10V input signals

· Low power consumption: Petaluma consumes less than 1W

Industry evaluation

· Maxim Integrated Reference Design Manager David Andeen said: “The Petaluma analog front-end solution is ideal for distribution automation networks with a high sampling rate of 250ksps per channel, which accurately captures fault events and enables utilities to be single Make an immediate response during the cycle."

· ICRC Intelligent Utilities Infrastructure Analyst Jacob Rodrigues Pereira said: “The complete signal chain AFE subsystem brings many convenient conditions for power companies to deploy smart grids, which can easily measure the energy of smart grids. With the development of distributed management, the value of distributed measurement solutions that provide multi-channel simultaneous, efficient sampling and high-precision node measurement is also increasing."
