Google's Daydream team has been trying various ways to use virtual reality technology as a universal medium and new entertainment. In Google’s recent functional experiment of letting people experience virtual coffee machines, researchers found that testers who learn through virtual reality technology learn much faster than testers who just watch video learning operations.
Although professional VR head-mounted devices such as the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift have been released for some time, most people in the average consumer regard it as a game or audio-visual tool. In this test, all testers were divided into two groups, each of which had to learn to operate on the same coffee machine, and the two groups did not use this coffee machine before. The first group of testers only allowed to learn the operation by watching YouTube online videos, while the other group simulated operations in the VR world through the cooperation of HTC Vivie and the handle. As RoadToVR explains, each team uses different training tools and the results are completely different.
In terms of learning speed, a group of people watching a video needs to watch three videos in a row to create a qualified espresso. In contrast, a group of virtual reality simulation operations only needs to be practiced twice and can be completed.
What's even more interesting is that the Daydream team found that in the group of virtual reality tests, the probability of making mistakes in actual operations is far less than watching video groups. One of the research chiefs, Ian MacGillivray, a software engineer at Google, was satisfied with the performance of both testers, but he believes that training in virtual reality is more efficient. The difference in the quality of the first cup of coffee produced by the two groups of people can be seen.
Although professional training of practitioners through virtual reality can have great advantages, some issues need attention. For example, in the VR simulation, although familiar with the entire operation process, it does not get some warnings and cautions like video education. For example, some parts of the coffee machine will be very hot at work, and the video will tell you that you need to be careful, but virtual reality testers often ignore this information and burn yourself in practice.
