On January 3 and 4, 2018, the National Press, Publication, Radio, Film, and Television Working Conference took place in Beijing. The event served as a key platform for reviewing the achievements of 2017, analyzing the current situation, and planning the strategic direction for the press and media sectors in 2018. This conference brought together senior officials and leaders from across the industry to discuss future priorities and challenges.
Deputy Minister Nie Chenxi, who represented the Party Group of the General Administration, delivered a keynote speech at the meeting. Other notable attendees included Party Group members such as Tian Jin, Tong Gang, Zhou Huilin, Zhang Hongsen, Wang Gengnian, and Yan Xiaoming. Tian Jin chaired the session and concluded with a comprehensive summary of the discussions and future plans.
Reflecting on the work of 2017, Nie Chenxi highlighted the significant progress made by the national press, publication, radio, film, and television system. He emphasized the firm establishment of the "four consciousnesses" and the adherence to correct political, propaganda, and value orientations. The year saw remarkable achievements in product quality, integration development, business growth, management improvements, and international communication capabilities. A more dynamic and professional workforce was also noted.
Nie Chenxi stressed that the 19th Party Congress marked a new era for the media industry, setting clear goals and responsibilities. He called for continued commitment to the correct political direction, a people-centered approach, and high-quality development. Innovation, he added, must remain at the core of the industry's efforts to ensure sustainable growth and vitality.
Looking ahead to 2018, Nie outlined five key areas of focus:
First, deepening the learning and promotion of Xi Jinping’s Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics and the spirit of the 19th Party Congress. This includes ensuring a thorough understanding and practical application of these principles.
Second, focusing on creating high-quality works that enrich the public’s cultural life. This involves promoting realistic themes, supporting major projects, and enhancing copyright protection to foster creativity.
Third, accelerating industry upgrades through reform and technological innovation. Integration with digital technologies like big data and AI is essential for modernizing the sector and improving public services.
Fourth, strengthening ideological control and position management. This includes maintaining security, resisting harmful views, and improving management efficiency through innovation.
Finally, expanding international communication and promoting China’s voice globally. Efforts should focus on effective storytelling, enhancing the reach of Chinese content, and leveraging platforms like the Silk Road Film and Television Bridge to increase global influence.
The conference underscored the importance of unity, innovation, and responsibility in shaping the future of China’s media landscape. It set a clear path forward for the industry to meet the demands of the new era.
