On January 5, Netease Technology News reported that following the discovery of insecure memory leaks affecting millions of Intel processors, ARM has now confirmed that several Cortex series processors also have similar vulnerabilities. The Cortex architecture is widely used across a range of devices, including Android and iOS smartphones, Nvidia Tegra chips, Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, and even Sony PlayStation Vita systems.
ARM recently disclosed four distinct processor vulnerabilities, highlighting that multiple Cortex models—such as the A8, A9, A15, A17, A57, A72, A73, and A75—are affected by more than two security flaws. These older models were commonly found in early Apple devices like the first three iPads, original iPad mini, iPhone 4/4s/5/5c, iPod Touch 4G/5G, and Apple TV 2G/3G. They were also present in some Google-branded phones, various Qualcomm Snapdragon-powered devices, and earlier generations of Nvidia Tegra and Samsung Exynos chips.
Due to the widespread licensing of ARM’s Cortex technology, the impact on different manufacturers’ custom chips varies greatly. As a result, compiling an exact list of all affected devices is nearly impossible. However, it remains unclear whether Apple’s later A-series chips or their internally developed processors are free from these vulnerabilities.
To protect ARM-based devices, users need to follow specific security measures depending on their chip and operating system. ARM has advised Android users and others to check for patches from their device manufacturers, while offering software mitigations for Linux. Google has already released updates for Android, but other devices may still be waiting for vendor-specific fixes. Apple has not yet publicly addressed which devices are impacted, nor has it provided a general solution. If iOS devices are affected, patches could come via software updates, though the performance impact is still uncertain.
Intel CEO Brian Krzanich mentioned that many products could be affected, though the extent will vary across devices. ARM noted that the risk of exploitation is relatively low, as these attacks require locally running malware. Therefore, users should keep their software updated and avoid suspicious links or downloads to stay secure.
