Qualcomm has officially introduced the Qualcomm AI Engine, a comprehensive hardware and software solution designed to enhance on-device artificial intelligence (AI) experiences across select Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ mobile platforms. The AI Engine is supported by several key platforms, including the Snapdragon 845, 835, 820, and 660, with the Snapdragon 845 offering the most advanced on-device AI processing capabilities. This innovation empowers devices to deliver intelligent features even without an internet connection, ensuring faster performance, better privacy, and greater reliability.
By leveraging the power of the Snapdragon core architecture—comprising the Hexagon™ vector processor, Adreno™ GPU, and Kryo™ CPU—the AI Engine enables efficient and rapid execution of AI tasks directly on the device. This heterogeneous computing approach allows developers and OEMs to optimize AI experiences across smartphones and other edge devices, making it easier to integrate powerful AI features into everyday applications.
The AI Engine's core software components include the Neural Processing Engine (NPE), which gives developers flexibility in choosing the best Snapdragon kernel for their AI workloads. It supports popular frameworks like TensorFlow, Caffe, Caffe2, and ONNX, providing cross-platform compatibility. Additionally, the Android Neural Network API (NN API) in Android Oreo allows direct access to the Snapdragon platform, with the Snapdragon 845 being the first to support this feature.
The Hexagon NN library further enhances performance by enabling AI algorithms to run directly on the Hexagon vector processor, optimizing operations such as convolution and pooling. This results in faster and more efficient AI execution on the device itself.
Gary Brotman, Director of Product Management at Qualcomm Technologies, emphasized that the growing number of AI features in smartphones demands a combination of hardware, software, and tools to meet developer needs and performance expectations. The AI Engine plays a crucial role in helping OEMs and partners accelerate AI development and deliver richer, more engaging user experiences.
Several smartphone manufacturers, including Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo, and others, have already integrated the AI Engine into their devices to enhance AI-driven features. Many are also planning to use it in future flagship models. Leading AI software companies, such as Shang Tang Technology, Face++ (Contour), EllipTIc Labs, ArcSoft, and Chuangtong Lianda, are working closely with Qualcomm to optimize AI models and bring new use cases to life.
Cloud service providers like Tencent and Baidu are also leveraging the AI Engine to improve AI-powered features on Snapdragon-powered devices. For instance, Tencent’s “High Energy Dance Room†feature in QQ uses the AI Engine to boost frame rates, while Baidu plans full support for the Qualcomm AI Ecosystem.
At Mobile World Congress 2018, Qualcomm showcased various AI innovations, including Deep Portrait from EllipTIc Labs, Style Conversion from Shang Tang, 2D Face Unlock from Face++, and the “High Energy Dance Room†from Tencent. These demonstrations highlight the growing momentum of AI on the edge and the potential for smarter, more responsive mobile experiences.
Steel poles are commonly used to carry several types of electric power lines, distribution lines and lighting system. Distribution lines carry power from local substations to customers. They generally carry voltages from 4.6 to 33kV for distances up to 30 miles, and include transformers to step the voltage down from the primary voltage to the lower secondary voltage used by the customer. A service drop carries this lower voltage to the customer's premises.
