National Geographic Brings VR Cameras to Space Station

The International Space Station recently received a special gift from Orbital ATK—a Cygnus cargo ship carrying a 360-degree camera. This advanced device is set to be used in creating immersive 3D and 360-degree virtual reality (VR) experiences for National Geographic's upcoming "Strange Rock" series. The goal is to bring the unique environment of space closer to Earth-bound audiences, offering them an unprecedented view of life aboard the ISS. Paolo Nespoli, an astronaut from the European Space Agency, will be the one operating the new camera. He'll guide viewers through the space station, capturing daily life in a way that has never been done before. Matt Zymet, executive director of Advanced Format at National Geographic, explained the purpose: “We want to use this 360-degree camera to document what it’s really like to live on the International Space Station.” The camera in question is the Vuze VR, developed by Humaneyes Technologies. It’s a compact, four-layered device equipped with eight built-in cameras capable of recording 4K 360-degree and 3D video. For those who have never left Earth, this technology offers a chance to experience the space station as if they were there, providing a closer look at the extraordinary environment where astronauts live and work. National Geographic describes the mission as an exploration of life 200 miles above Earth. “Astronauts are elite among elites, far from home, seeing our planet from a completely different perspective,” the magazine noted. Through this project, the public will get a rare glimpse into the daily routines and breathtaking views of space. Nespoli will act as both the VR director and photographer for the series. He will capture the stunning interior of the ISS, including its domed observation area, allowing viewers on Earth to feel as though they're floating alongside him. Throughout the process, he will collaborate with mission control to send footage back to Earth, where National Geographic will edit and release the final content as part of the "Strange Rock" premiere. In addition, award-winning director Darren Aronofsky and his production company Nutopia are teaming up to create a groundbreaking global series. This ambitious project will run for 100 weeks, blending content from both Earth and space, and promising to deliver a truly unique storytelling experience for audiences worldwide.
