Western media has been highlighting that China is undergoing a real artificial intelligence revolution, with its capabilities now matching those of the current U.S. industry leader. Chinese national leaders have clearly identified artificial intelligence as a key strategic priority. According to the government's newly released development plan for next-generation AI technology in July this year, by 2020, China's overall AI technology and applications will be on par with global leaders, and by 2030, it aims to become a major global center for AI innovation.
According to a report from Spain’s “National News†website on December 24, this strategy is already showing tangible results. On the positive side, Chinese AI companies are making significant progress in areas such as autonomous ships, AI-driven traffic management systems in some of the world’s most congested cities, early disease detection, and even predicting health issues before patients are aware of them. Additionally, AI-powered loan platforms are being used to identify the best loan candidates and prevent fraud.
However, according to the report, China’s AI development still faces challenges. So far, much of the research has focused on facial and speech recognition technologies. While these areas have seen impressive progress, other aspects of AI—such as natural language understanding and complex decision-making systems—still require more investment and development.
The Spanish publication also highlighted Keda Xunfei, a company known for achieving 95% accuracy in voice recognition. It is also involved in public safety technology. In collaboration with the Chinese government, the company is developing an advanced monitoring system capable of identifying specific sounds during phone calls. Furthermore, it provides voice recognition equipment for various provincial public security systems across China.
A sales manager from the University of Science and Technology stated, “We can definitely use AI to address public safety issues.†The company’s speech recognition software can detect certain words that may trigger suspicion during a conversation. If these words appear in a specific sequence, the call is automatically disconnected. This technology has helped the police dismantle several telecom fraud rings and prevented millions in potential losses.
According to the Spanish newspaper, whether for security, defense, economic interests, or social welfare, there is no doubt that China is emerging as a leading force in the AI industry.
The report also pointed out that China has several competitive advantages. Its digital economy has reached $3.4 trillion, accounting for 30% of the country’s GDP. With 751 million internet users and 1.39 billion mobile phone users, China generates massive amounts of data, which serves as a powerful foundation for AI development and innovation.
