On January 26th, Apple finally launched its first smart speaker, the HomePod, with pre-orders opening in the US, Australia, and the UK. The device was officially released on February 9th. According to Apple’s recent environmental report, the HomePod uses extremely low energy. When playing music, its power consumption is even lower than that of ENERGY STAR-certified LED light bulbs. This is a significant achievement, especially considering how many devices remain active 24/7.
Apple prioritized energy efficiency from the start, using low-power components and developing optimized software to maximize performance while minimizing power use. As a result, the HomePod exceeds the energy efficiency standards set by the US Energy Star for audio/video equipment.
In standby mode, the HomePod consumes between 1.71W and 1.76W across different voltages—100V, 115V, and 230V. That's practically negligible. When playing music at 50% volume via iTunes, it uses between 8.69W and 9.25W, with an impressive power efficiency of around 90% across all tested voltages.
Apple also compared the HomePod’s power usage to a typical ENERGY STAR-certified A19 LED bulb, which uses 9–10W. This means that listening to music on the HomePod is not as power-hungry as one might expect.
The company provided detailed charts showing the power consumption of the HomePod under various voltage conditions. These include 100V in Japan, 115V in the US and Canada, and 230V in the UK.
