On March 15, 2018, Tencent unveiled its three core strategies in the field of artificial intelligence. First, it aimed to develop general AI; second, it launched the RoboticsX lab to explore the integration between the virtual and real worlds; and third, it continued to focus on AI applications in healthcare.
In an interview with a reporter from the 21st Century Business Herald, Tencent’s Vice President Yao Xing emphasized that games would serve as the ideal environment for advancing general AI. He explained that AI essentially simulates the real world in a virtual setting, and games are one of Tencent’s strongest domains. As a result, Tencent plans to build a virtual world through "AI + Game" to train AI systems, accelerating their real-world applications.
Zhang Jun, a representative from Tencent AILab, noted that while AI remains a long-term goal, there are immediate challenges to address, such as deepening fundamental scientific research.
Tencent also announced a strategic partnership with Nature Research, a subsidiary of Springer Nature. The collaboration aims to explore interdisciplinary AI applications, particularly in the medical field, by addressing real-world challenges and promoting the development and implementation of AI-driven medical solutions.
Dean Sanderson, Managing Director of Nature Research, highlighted China’s rapid progress in scientific research, noting that Chinese scientific output is now comparable to that of the U.S., with a growing number of high-quality papers. He expressed optimism about Tencent’s work in healthcare, pointing out that China leads globally in clinical experiments and has a strong data advantage.
The collaboration will include joint events like the Nature Conference in Shenzhen and the launch of *Nature Machine Intelligence*, a new publication focusing on AI.
Tencent's RoboticsX lab marks a new phase in its AI strategy. According to Yao Xing, RoboticsX and AILab will act as twin pillars supporting Tencent’s AI industry. The lab, along with AILab, focuses on foundational AI research and application, covering areas like machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing.
With over 70 scientists and 300 engineers, AILab has already integrated AI into products like WeChat and QQ. The lab envisions robots as key carriers for AI in the real world, which could take various forms—smart speakers, glasses, or even humanoid robots.
Tencent has been actively investing in robotics, having made four key investments in robotics companies last year. Meanwhile, both Baidu and Alibaba have already taken steps in this space. Baidu established labs focused on AI and autonomous vehicles, while Alibaba created the Dharma House to drive breakthroughs in technology.
As BAT companies continue to expand their AI and robotics efforts, competition is expected to intensify, but this will ultimately benefit the broader development of artificial intelligence.
