On March 15, 2018, Tencent unveiled its three core strategies in the field of artificial intelligence. First, it aimed to develop general AI; second, it launched the RoboticsX lab to explore the intersection between the virtual and physical worlds; and third, it continued to focus on AI applications in healthcare.
In an interview with a reporter from the 21st Century Business Herald, Tencent Vice President Yao Xing emphasized that gaming is the ideal environment for advancing general AI. He explained that AI essentially simulates real-world scenarios, and games are one of Tencent’s strongest areas. By leveraging AI and gaming, Tencent aims to build a virtual world where AI can be trained and later applied more effectively in real-life situations.
Zhang Jun, a representative from Tencent AILab, noted that while AI remains a long-term goal, the company is currently focusing on short-term challenges, such as deepening fundamental research.
Tencent AILab also announced a strategic partnership with Nature Research, a division of Springer Nature. This collaboration focuses on interdisciplinary research in AI + Healthcare, aiming to identify real-world medical challenges and accelerate the development of AI-driven medical solutions.
Dean Sanderson, Managing Director of Nature Research, highlighted the rapid progress of Chinese scientific research, noting that China may soon surpass the U.S. in the number of scientific papers. He expressed confidence in Tencent's AI health initiatives, citing China's strong data advantages and leading position in clinical trials.
In August 2017, Tencent launched its first AI healthcare product, "Tencent Video," initially designed for early esophageal cancer screening with a 90% accuracy rate. It has since expanded to screen for lung nodules, diabetes, and retinopathy, now deployed in over 100 top-tier hospitals nationwide.
The Ministry of Science and Technology also recognized Tencent’s efforts by including its medical imaging platform in the list of national AI open innovation platforms.
Looking ahead, the two parties plan to host the Nature Conference in Shenzhen and launch a new publication, *Nature Machine Intelligence*, in 2019.
In addition to AI and healthcare, Tencent is expanding into robotics through its RoboticsX lab, part of the Technology Engineering Group (TEG). According to Yao Xing, robots could serve as the next major interface for AI, similar to how computers and smartphones shaped previous eras.
Tencent AILab, established in 2016, focuses on foundational AI research and has already integrated its technology into products like WeChat, QQ, and Daily Express. With over 70 scientists and 300 engineers, the lab is driving AI applications across multiple domains.
While Tencent is making significant strides, competitors like Baidu and Alibaba have also been actively investing in AI and robotics. Baidu recently expanded its AI labs, while Alibaba has been developing robotic technologies since 2016, including the Pepper robot.
As the competition intensifies, the race for AI dominance is expected to drive further innovation and growth in the field.
