**First, the Measurement Principle**
The ECH2O system consists of data loggers, sensors, communication modules, and software designed to measure soil moisture and other environmental factors. It is easy to use and does not require any programming knowledge.
There are two models of data loggers available: the EM50 and the EM50R. The EM50 is a 5-channel, standalone data logger suitable for field research and commercial agriculture. For outdoor applications, it must be installed in a weatherproof enclosure. The EM50R includes an additional RF radio communication module, which operates at low power and supports three frequency options—900 MHz, 924 MHz, and 2.4 GHz—to meet global radio regulations.

**Third, Software**

The EM50 has 1MB of memory, capable of storing up to 28,672 data points across five channels. Use the Download New Data or Download All Data functions under the Data menu to retrieve stored information. To convert raw voltage data into usable results, select Convert ECH2O Data File from the File menu and follow the prompts.
8. **Help Function**
The software includes a help section with frequently asked questions. Common issues include connection problems, which may be resolved by checking the COM port or replacing the battery. If your computer lacks a COM port, consider using a USB-RS232 converter.
**Fourth, Maintenance**
The EM50 and EM50R require minimal maintenance. They are powered by five AA alkaline or lithium batteries. The ECH2O Utility software displays battery status, and if the battery level drops below 5%, it should be replaced. Note that replacing the battery resets the internal clock, so users must re-synchronize the time using the software.
The device also features a status indicator that shows whether the EM50 is recording data, connected to a serial port, or experiencing an error. A reset button is available to restart the device if it becomes unresponsive. However, removing the battery or pressing the reset button will erase all stored data.
