Recent reports suggest that many believe the future of wearable tech has already been mapped out, with Snapchat reportedly working on smart glasses. A March 2nd report indicated that Snap plans to release two eyewear products in Q3 of 2018. However, a Cheddar article later clarified that the 2018 product won’t be a full-fledged pair of smart glasses but rather an update focused on performance improvements and bug fixes.
It was also reported that a new version of Spectacles is coming soon, which might surprise many given the company’s previous struggles—losing nearly $40 million during the launch of its first model. Despite these challenges, Snap continues to push forward with its vision for augmented reality (AR) through wearable technology.
CEO Evan Spiegel recently admitted that the initial product didn’t meet expectations, revealing that only 150,000 units were sold, with “hundreds of thousands†still in storage. This highlights the challenges of entering the wearable market with a new concept. But despite this, the company is not giving up on its AR ambitions.
What's truly intriguing is that according to the latest reports, Snap is working on a third generation of glasses. These new models are said to feature dual cameras capable of 3D depth effects in videos, as well as built-in GPS. These features alone make it clear that this is more than just a camera accessory—it’s moving into the realm of smart glasses.
The third-gen glasses are expected to have a round aluminum frame and a leather case, with a price tag around $300—significantly higher than the current model priced at $130. Although the company initially planned to release the dual-lens version this year, it now seems they are shifting the launch to 2019. When asked directly, Snap chose not to comment on the report.
All signs point to one conclusion: Snap is not just a camera app anymore. While it often refers to itself as a media company, its real focus lies in augmented reality. With each new product, the company is slowly building its presence in the smart glasses market. Now, the big question is whether it can compete with Apple and finally bring AR into the mainstream.
