Meizu PRO 7/7 Plus preemptive evaluation: dual-screen dual camera, starting X30

[PConline Evaluation] Standing amidst the ceaseless flow of time, I found myself pondering why humans need a window. In ancient times, before the advent of electricity and fire, we resided in caves, carving out openings for light and air. During the agricultural age, we lived in wooden huts and opened windows to gaze at the stars, letting moonlight dance upon our windowsills. As civilization advanced, we moved into towering concrete structures, where expansive windows offered breathtaking vistas. Later, as we transitioned from material pursuits to introspection, we realized that our souls too require a window—a portal through which light can banish the shadows within. In fact, smartphones also need to open a "window." If the screen is the door leading to the vibrant mobile internet world, then the "Painting Screen" on the Meizu PRO 7/7 Plus liberates us from the hustle and bustle of daily life. This "window" is a unique feature in the monotonous smartphone market. Besides this stunning secondary screen, what other tricks does the Meizu PRO 7/7 Plus have up its sleeve? Let's watch a short video and dive into our review right away. --- ### ▍PRO 7 | PRO 7 Plus Specifications Overview Depending on the configuration, the PRO 7 is equipped with either the Helio P25 or Helio X30 platform, while the PRO 7 Plus comes standard with the Helio X30. Additionally, the primary differences lie in screen size, RAM, and battery capacity. The PRO 7 Plus also supports the new 5V/5A fast charging technology. | Model | Meizu PRO 7 | Meizu PRO 7 Plus | |---------------------|-----------------------|------------------------| | **Processor** | MediaTek Helio P25 | MediaTek Helio X30 | | | 8×A53 | 2×A73+4×A53+4×A35 | | **GPU** | Mali T880 | IMG 7XTP-MT4 | | **RAM** | 4GB LPDDR4X | 6GB LPDDR4X | | **Storage** | 64GB eMMC | 128GB UFS | 64GB/128GB UFS | | **Screen** | 5.2-inch Full HD AMOLED | 5.7-inch Quad HD AMOLED | | | 1.9-inch AMOLED | 1.9-inch AMOLED | | **Rear Camera** | 12MP (Color) + 12MP (BW), f/2.0, PDAF | Same | | **Front Camera** | 16MP, f/2.0 | Same | | **System** | Flyme 6 (Android 7.0) | Same | | **Colors** | Static Black, Champagne Gold, Titian Red, Shadow Black | Black, Yi Xia Gold, Moonlight Silver, Yingying Black | | **Dimensions** | 147.62×70.72×7.3mm, 163g | 157.34×77.24×7.3mm, 173g | | **Battery/Fast Charge** | 3000mAh, 8V/3A | 3500mAh, 5V/5A | | **Network** | Dual SIM Dual Standby, Full Netcom | Same | | **Hi-Fi Chip** | CS43130 | Same | | **Price** | Standard: 2880 yuan (P25 64GB) | Standard: 3580 yuan (X30 64GB) | --- ### Appearance: Small Secondary Screen, Big Difference Meizu is one of China’s earliest smartphone manufacturers. Back then, most of their phones were operator-customized machines with mediocre configurations and unimpressive designs. In 2009, Meizu launched the M8, which wasn’t groundbreaking but marked the beginning of Meizu’s own smartphone era. Later, the M9, the "Dream Machine" MX, and others were all remarkable domestic products, earning them a loyal fanbase. Unfortunately, as more new models were released, Meizu's phones became increasingly homogeneous. Perhaps Meizu realized this issue, as the PRO 7 released this year stands out creatively compared to all previous flagships. The front design of the PRO 7 is similar to previous Meizu phones. Though it lacks the trendy bezel-less or full-screen designs, the narrow bezels still provide an excellent visual experience—something Meizu has consistently focused on. The back design is the most significant change, completely subverting previous Meizu designs. To date, no one else has attempted a dual-screen design. At the top left of the PRO 7 is a "small display," which Meizu calls the "Painting Screen." This screen can display caller info, time, weather, and notifications. It’s essentially an auxiliary function. I couldn’t help but think of a funny question: Before dropping my phone, should I now pray to the edge facing the ground? This 1.9-inch secondary screen takes up less than 1/7 of the back surface area and supports displaying phone status like weather, steps, time, and notifications. While using it, we discovered some fun interactions: --- ### Selfie Fun With the rear camera being stronger than the front camera, this secondary screen design is particularly suitable for selfies. Since you can use the volume buttons to snap photos, even those with smaller hands can easily grip the phone and take a good shot. "Click," and voila! It looks great! --- ### Interactive Features Given the small screen size, it’s not easy to operate without specific interactions. Fortunately, the functions on this screen are limited. Similar to smartwatches, the PRO 7/7 Plus supports flipping, wrist raising, and wake-up gestures. Additionally, double-clicking the screen can turn it on or off. --- ### Sleep MP3 Mode Pressing the power button for a long time and selecting "Sleep MP3" will put the phone into "Sleep MP3" mode. At this point, the phone can only play music, closing all other features, and the secondary screen displays music playback details. Let go of everything, forget all worries, and quietly enjoy the beauty of music! This is the best tribute to the MP3 era. --- ### Camera: Dual Cameras, Dual Screens, Perfect Selfies As Meizu’s first dual-camera phone, the PRO 7 is equipped with a 12-megapixel IMX386 sensor with a physical aperture of f/2.0 and supports PDAF phase focusing. Meizu added multi-frame noise reduction technology and background blur, extreme black-and-white, and other modes to the camera algorithm. Perhaps more important than hardware is the choice. While many competitors are arming their front cameras, Meizu has opened a new world by combining the rear dual camera with the screen, creating new possibilities for selfies. The edge recognition of portrait subjects is very accurate, thanks to Meizu’s targeted optimization of multiple scenes, resulting in a more natural and realistic depth-of-field blur effect. The front 16-megapixel selfie camera features enhanced detail and vividness. In low-light environments, the pixel four-in-one algorithm improves image quality through oversampling. --- ### Evening Scene Surprises In low-light conditions, the "color + black-and-white" dual-lens setup works together to enhance image quality. The color lens records color information, while the black-and-white lens captures levels and details while significantly increasing the amount of incoming light. Multi-frame noise reduction algorithms allow the Meizu PRO 7 to launch a new night scene enhancement mode with higher brightness and excellent noise suppression. --- ### Conclusion Meizu has always stood out in the crowded smartphone market. Like the snail in Jay Chou’s song, it climbs step by step toward the peak. Despite the buzz around the PRO 7/7 Plus before its release, it’s worth giving it a try before dismissing it. Who knows, it might just be the perfect device for you.
