Cylindrical deformation and correction method

After the cylinder is welded, it may develop concave or convex deformations at the welds. Correcting concave deformation in the longitudinal seam of a cylinder is illustrated in Figure 12-26. During the correction process, a linear heating technique is applied along the longitudinal seam. The heating width typically ranges from 8 to 20 mm, and the temperature is maintained around 600°C. Once heated, a screw or jack is used to press outward on the cylinder, helping to restore its shape. Usually, two rounds of linear heating are sufficient to correct the concave defect effectively. When the roundness of a thick-walled cylinder does not meet the required standards, the cylinder is placed on a flat platform, and short steel bars of the same size are positioned underneath, as shown in Figure 12-27. An arc template is first used to check the curvature. If the curvature is too poor, linear heating is performed along the outer wall of the cylinder. On the other hand, if the curvature is insufficient, heating is applied along the inner wall in the axial direction. After heating, the cylinder is allowed to cool naturally. This process can be repeated several times until the desired roundness is achieved. These correction methods are commonly used in industrial settings to ensure the structural integrity and dimensional accuracy of cylindrical components after welding. Proper heating and controlled pressing techniques help minimize residual stresses and prevent further distortion. It's important to follow safety procedures during the heating process to avoid overheating or damaging the material. With careful execution, these techniques can significantly improve the quality of the final product.
