On September 11, NetEase Technology exclusively reported that Zhang Zhiwei, the president of LeSpot’s ecological sales and service platform in China, will take over as the new CEO of LeTV. This development has sparked considerable interest within the tech community, as it marks a significant shift in leadership for the once-dominant tech giant.
When contacted by NetEase Science and Technology, LeTV did not confirm the news, stating that they had no official information at this time. However, sources close to the company have indicated that the transition is likely to happen, though an official announcement is still pending.
This move follows a series of internal restructuring efforts at LeTV. In March 2016, Lepar, which was previously responsible for LeTV’s sales, became independent, allowing Zhang Zhiwei to return to the core innovation team. This personnel change is seen as a strategic step aimed at reinvigorating the company's sales and operational structure.
LeTV Key Figures
Zhang Zhiwei has long been a pivotal figure in LeTV’s channel expansion. Since joining LeTV in 2013, he played a crucial role in building both online and offline sales networks. His expertise in e-commerce and marketing made him a key player in the company’s growth strategy.
In March 2013, Zhang joined LeTV as vice president of sales, overseeing the distribution of products like the LeTV Super TV and internet set-top boxes. Before that, he held senior roles at Midea Group, Hisense Kelon, and JD.com, where he gained extensive experience in sales and digital marketing. In late 2013, he helped launch the Leshi Mall, further strengthening LeTV’s retail presence.
Under his leadership, LeTV expanded its offline presence through the LePar network, which later became a separate entity. In March 2016, LePar officially launched as a standalone company, with Zhang moving to lead the O2O sales platform. He was responsible for the overall strategy and operations of this division, reporting directly to Jia Yueting, the founder of LeTV.
In November 2016, following media scrutiny, Zhang took charge of all hardware sales and services across LeTV’s ecosystem. That same month, LeTV announced the formation of the “Lesso Ecological Sales and Service Platform (China),†under the Smart Terminal Business Group. Zhang was appointed as its president, overseeing the sales of all smart devices, including TVs, smartphones, VR, AR, and more.
Return to LeTV
In May 2017, LeTV underwent another major restructuring, with the sales function of the Super TV returning to the company. Liang Jun, then the new president, took direct control of the Super TV sales, aiming to address the information imbalance between production and sales.
The previous setup, where the LeSco Eco Sales and Service Platform managed the sales of various smart devices, created inefficiencies. By centralizing sales under LeTV, the company aims to streamline operations and improve coordination.
Now, with Zhang Zhiwei back as CEO, his deep understanding of both the sales channels and content offerings makes him well-suited to lead LeTV into a new phase. With the focus shifting back to core products, the future of LeTV may depend heavily on his leadership and strategic vision.
