I started writing this chronicle because I watched Apple's annual conference. It was an inspiring moment that made me reflect on my journey with iPhones over the years. The iPhone 1 was sold with a two-year contract. A 4GB version cost $499, while an 8GB version was $599. The bare-metal price wasn't announced, but it was about $200 more. The release was delayed until June, and it didn't arrive in Asia until 2008, let alone mainland China.
In 2008, Apple launched the 3G iPhone at the Global Developer Conference. It supported 3G networks, added GPS, and included Chinese handwriting input. The design remained similar, but the thickness increased slightly. The price dropped significantly, making it more accessible. I bought a second-hand 16GB iPhone 3G in 2010 for 2,000 RMB, which was my first iPhone experience.
In 2009, Apple released the iPhone 3GS at WWDC. It brought hardware upgrades, including a faster processor, improved camera, and a larger screen. Although Jobs wasn’t on stage due to his health, the iPhone 3GS marked a significant step forward. I still have mine and use it as a music player.
In 2010, the iPhone 4 was launched, featuring a Retina display, front-facing camera, and a new aluminum frame. It was the last iPhone Jobs personally introduced before his passing. The iPhone 4 was revolutionary, with a 960x640 resolution, a 500-megapixel camera, and a 1GHz A4 processor. It was thinner than ever, at just 9.3mm.
In 2011, Apple released the iPhone 4S, which introduced Siri. Though the design was similar to the 4, the internal upgrades were impressive. The A5 processor, 8MP camera, and 4G support made it a major leap forward. Jobs passed away shortly after, marking the end of an era.
In 2012, Apple finally released the iPhone 5 with a 4-inch Retina display, a slimmer design, and a new Lightning port. It was a big change from the previous models, and it set the stage for future innovations.
In 2013, Apple launched the iPhone 5C and 5S. The 5C offered colorful designs, while the 5S introduced the 64-bit A7 chip and Touch ID. The 5S became a classic, with features like the M7 motion coprocessor and improved camera.
In 2014, Apple introduced the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, featuring larger screens and better performance. These were the first iPhones to offer 1080p resolution and NFC support. They also introduced Apple Pay and the Apple Watch.
In 2015, the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus brought 3D Touch, a 12MP camera, and improved performance. The 6s Plus even had optical image stabilization.
In 2016, Apple released the iPhone SE, a smaller version of the 6s, and the iPhone 7 with a redesigned home button and waterproofing. The 7 Plus featured a dual-lens camera and 2x optical zoom.
In 2017, rumors suggested Apple would unveil three new models, possibly with a notch and a redesigned home button. The event was highly anticipated, and many were eager to see what Apple had in store.
This journey through Apple’s history has been incredible. Each iPhone brought something new, and each generation pushed the boundaries of what a smartphone could be. As I look back, I’m grateful for the devices that shaped my life over the past decade.
