Hao Jianan: How to assist commercialization and driverless driving?

On July 15, 2017, the Netease Future Technology Summit took place in Beijing. This year's summit, themed "New Life," highlighted how the internet industry is rebounding from a prolonged capital winter. Major companies are speeding up their transformations, while new unicorns are emerging at an impressive pace. Young entrepreneurs are also stepping up, reinvigorating the sector. The internet is paving the way for an entirely new future. The summit featured six forums, including New Technology, New Future, New Content, New Entertainment, New Consumption, and topics like AI+Finance, AI+Travel, AI+Life, and AR Future. Renowned scientists, entrepreneurs, investors, and跨界stars from across the globe were invited to discuss the future of artificial intelligence, consumer upgrades, and AR. During the AI+Travel session, Hao Jianan, Co-Founder and COO of TuSimple, shared insights on unmanned business opportunities. He emphasized that both autonomous driving and driver-assisted systems offer distinct business models. While driver-assisted vehicles maintain traditional industry chains, with Tier 2 suppliers providing new algorithms or modules to Tier 1 manufacturers, autonomous vehicles focus on post-sale operational profits. Hao explained that driver-assisted vehicles primarily enhance existing sales models. By adding advanced features like AEB (Automatic Emergency Braking) and ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), cars can command higher prices, generating incremental revenue. However, the real value lies in autonomous vehicles, where profitability shifts to post-sale operations. Autonomous vehicles reduce labor costs during operation, creating ongoing profits. These profits are shared among various stakeholders, including original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), operating companies, and technology providers. Unlike traditional tech sales, autonomous solutions require continuous iteration through data collection, system updates, and performance analysis to ensure long-term profitability. TuSimple focuses on delivering comprehensive solutions, integrating both hardware and software. They collaborate with OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers to prototype systems that are then mass-produced. While the ownership of prototypes may vary, the real financial gain comes from autonomous vehicles operating on roads without human intervention, dividing operational profits among participants. In summary, Hao concluded that while driver-assistance systems augment existing automotive sales, autonomous driving transforms the industry through operational innovation. This shift represents a fundamental change in how businesses approach mobility solutions. Thank you all for listening!
