On July 15, 2017, the NetEase Future Technology Summit took place in Beijing, focusing on the theme of "New Life." This theme reflects how the internet industry is emerging from a prolonged two-year capital winter, with large corporations speeding up reforms and unicorns springing up endlessly. Young entrepreneurs are revitalizing and re-emerging, bringing about an entirely new future through the internet.
The summit featured six forums, including New Technology, New Future, New Content, New Entertainment, New Consumption, and AI+, covering topics like finance, travel, life, and AR. Renowned scientists, entrepreneurs, investors, and cross-border stars from around the globe were invited to discuss the future of artificial intelligence, consumer upgrades, and augmented reality.
One of the highlights of the summit was a special session on "AI + Travel," hosted by NetEase Technology. Hao Jianan, Co-founder and COO of TuSimple, shared insights on unmanned business models during this session. He discussed the differences between fully autonomous driving and driver-assisted systems, emphasizing that both have distinct business models.
For driver-assisted systems, the existing automotive supply chain remains intact, with Tier 2 suppliers potentially providing new algorithms or modules to Tier 1 suppliers. Ultimately, profitability comes from selling cars equipped with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) features, allowing manufacturers to charge premium prices due to the added value. Companies like Tesla exemplify this model by offering ADAS packages that customers can activate, generating additional revenue streams.
In contrast, fully autonomous driving generates profits post-sale through operational services. While the vehicle manufacturer retains some profit, the lion's share often goes to the operating company or technology provider. These providers don't just deliver technology once; they continuously iterate, analyze data, and refine their systems to maximize operational profits. This ongoing process ensures long-term success.
TuSimple aims to offer comprehensive solutions, including both hardware and software, collaborating with OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers. Their prototype systems will be integrated into mass-produced vehicles, which could be retained by companies like Amazon or Robinson. However, the true profit lies in the autonomous vehicles' ability to operate without human drivers, splitting the savings among stakeholders.
Hao concluded his speech by thanking everyone for their attention, highlighting TuSimple's commitment to delivering complete solutions. The event underscored the transformative potential of AI across various industries, marking a significant step toward a new era of technological advancement.
Overall, the summit highlighted how AI is reshaping industries and creating opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship, and collaboration.
