Clearer: Entering the Era of High-Definition Television
What kind of journey has the public's TV experience undergone? From increasingly clear pictures to more diverse service functions, this is something many can relate to. Around the year 2000, families entered the analog TV era, where watching dozens of programs was considered cutting-edge. A decade later, we transitioned to the digital TV age. From 2010 to 2015, we moved into the era of high-definition bidirectional digital TV. Now, we’re entering the era of smart TV, 4K ultra-high definition, on-demand services, fast broadband, and smart homes.
How can we enjoy a 4K experience? Essentially, it involves three components: an ultra-high definition TV signal source, a channel that supports ultra-high definition transmission, and a TV capable of playing ultra-high definition content. Guangdong Radio and Television Network is building networks and platforms to ensure these services are upgraded.
What distinguishes 4K from regular HD? Reporters learned that 4K refers to a resolution of 3840×2160, a high frame rate (60 fps), Dolby surround sound, and high dynamic range imaging. More Fun: Smart Gateways Bring New Experiences
This year, Guangdong Broadcasting Network’s new home smart gateway, the "Benefit Home Server," is evolving from traditional set-top boxes. It will play a crucial role in 4K TV ultra-high definition transmission. Ye Zhirong, Chairman of the company, stated: "Our network already serves over 20 million home users, achieving initial interconnectivity, interaction, and intelligence. The next step is collaboration with other industries. First and foremost, creating an open terminal, which is the new home intelligence gateway."
"In the future, not every TV will require a set-top box. A single 'Benefit Home Server' in a household can provide all TV services to the living room and bedrooms," said Engineer Li Jianhua.
Reports indicate that compared to previous set-top boxes, the "Benefit" supports four channels of 4K signals and allows four home TVs to play different content simultaneously. This marks the end of the era of multiple set-top boxes and multiple subscription fees, saving citizens money while watching TV. Additionally, once the "Benefit" WiFi connects, mobile videos can be streamed directly to the TV.
Moreover, "Benefit" will offer richer entertainment experiences: over 140 live channels, major film and TV zones like Tianhua, Huadian, Europe and the US, Wenguang, Mango, and CCTV Six; four major internet video zones including iQIYI, Galaxy, Kiwi, Tencent Video, and Cloud Audio; time-shift functionality allowing viewers to catch up on shows just like on computers; purchasing lottery tickets on TV; and gaming options, including special settings for children’s games.
Currently, Guangdong Radio and Television Network has implemented supporting programs for 4K TV application demonstration areas in Guangzhou and Huizhou. The network transformation of the demonstration area and preferential policies for 4K packages have been completed. In the future, Zhongshan and Shantou will also become pilot cities, gradually covering the Pearl River Delta region. Smarter: The New Digital Home Initiative Begins
According to reports, not only does 4K TV play a role, but "Benefit" will become a super service platform, supporting smart homes, smart communities, and smart cities.
